Most people searching for Karbon alternatives are not unhappy with the software. They are unhappy with the arithmetic. Karbon is per user, and per-user pricing has a particular way of turning a good year into an expensive one. The second reason, further down the list but more annoying, is that a Karbon alternative is usually being evaluated by a firm too small to qualify for monthly billing.
This page compares five of them against Karbon's own published numbers. Full disclosure first: it is published by Kveldo, one of the five. Every figure comes from each company's own pricing page on October 14, 2026, in US dollars, and there is a section on us near the end that you can skip.
Key points
- Karbon pricing is $59 per user per month on Team and $89 on Business with annual billing, or $79 and $99 monthly. Monthly billing is only offered to teams of four or more.
- Jetpack Workflow is the cheapest per seat at $49 Starter and $59 Premium, but it is workflow software: no client portal and no e-signature appear on its pricing page, and document storage is a $5 per 100GB add-on.
- Canopy starts higher at $74 per user per month and prices its strongest features as separate power-ups, from $34 per client credit for tax workflow automation.
- Financial Cents is the cheapest full practice management per seat at $19 Solo and $49 Team, with a 12-month agreement on every plan.
- Karbon's own e-signature is a separate purchase: credit bundles from $100 per 100 credits, with knowledge-based authentication spending two credits per request.
Karbon pricing, so the comparison has a baseline
| Karbon plan | Annual, per user/mo | Monthly, per user/mo | Per user/year (annual) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Team | $59 | $79 | $708 |
| Business | $89 | $99 | $1,068 |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom |
Two things about Karbon pricing shape every comparison below.
Monthly billing requires four or more users, on both paid tiers. A one, two or three person firm pays for the year.
And Team is capped in ways the price does not advertise: 1,000 contacts, 35 workflow statuses, 40 work templates, 30 work types, three teams. User permissions, the Karbon API, automatic client reminders, tasklist automators and client groups are absent from Team entirely, and Email Insights and custom reporting are paid add-ons on both Team and Business. For most growing firms the honest Karbon number is $89, not $59.

Karbon vs Canopy
The Karbon vs Canopy question is really about where the complexity is priced. Canopy's Standard tier is $74 per user per month billed annually, above Karbon Team at $59 and below Karbon Business at $89, and it includes CRM, document management with eSign, client portal and secure messaging, recurring task workflows, invoicing and payments.
Where they diverge is the add-on layer. Canopy prices its specialist capability as separate power-ups:
| Canopy power-up | Price |
|---|---|
| Tax Workflow Automation | from $34 per credit/client |
| Close Automation | $10 per connected client/month, first 5 included |
| Tax Resolution | $50 per user/month |
| Knowledge-Based Authentication | $1.25 per KBA credit |
Karbon's equivalent unbundling is narrower but hits everyone: e-signature credits, Email Insights, custom reporting.
The practical read: Canopy costs more at the door and more again if you need tax resolution or close automation, but its base tier includes e-signature that Karbon charges for. A firm doing straightforward compliance work will usually find Karbon Business cheaper than Canopy Standard plus power-ups. A firm doing tax resolution will find Canopy's $50 per user module cheaper than building the process by hand in either.
Jetpack Workflow vs Karbon
This is the comparison most likely to mislead on price alone, so be careful with it.
Jetpack Workflow publishes $49 per seat for Starter and $59 for Premium. Against Karbon Team at $59 that looks like a straight saving, and for the job Jetpack does it may well be one. Starter covers unlimited projects and clients, unlimited templates with customizable automation, team collaboration and support. Premium adds time tracking, budget and actuals reports, capacity management, SSO and a dedicated account manager.
What is not on the page is the point. No client portal. No e-signature. Document storage is an add-on at $5 per 100GB, and onboarding with workflow setup is a one-time $1,500 package.
So anyone treating Jetpack Workflow as a Jetpack Workflow alternative to full practice management is comparing two different categories. Jetpack runs your firm's internal work. It does not give your clients a place to log in, upload a document and sign something. If you already have a portal you are happy with, that is a saving. If you do not, the comparison needs a portal and an e-signature tool added to Jetpack's side before the columns mean anything.
One honest caveat on the price itself: Jetpack's pricing page toggles between annual and monthly, and the $49 and $59 figures are the state it shows by default. We are not quoting a monthly rate because we did not capture one.
TaxDome and Financial Cents
Both are full practice management, and both answer the per-user problem differently from Karbon.
TaxDome charges $800, $1,000 or $1,200 per seat per year on a one-year commitment, billed upfront, dropping to $700, $900 and $1,100 across three years. Per seat per year that undercuts Karbon Business at $1,068 only on the Essentials tier, which is solo-only. The reason firms pick it over Karbon is scope: unlimited e-signature with KBA included rather than bought in credits, and on Pro an IRS integration that pulls transcripts. It is the opposite trade from Karbon, more cash sooner for fewer line items later.
Financial Cents is the cheapest per seat of the full platforms: $19 Solo, $49 Team, $69 Scale per user per month billed annually. Every tier carries a 12-month agreement, monthly billing needs five users, and the tax software integrations that matter to most tax practices sit on Scale rather than Team. Mandatory two-factor authentication is Enterprise-only.
Where Kveldo fits, since we published this
Kveldo is the one on the list that is not priced per user. It is $79 a month Solo, $199 for up to five staff seats, $399 for up to fifteen, $699 for up to twenty-five, month to month with no lock-in and a 14-day trial that does not ask for a card. Client portal users are unlimited and free on every tier, Kveldo Sign has no per-envelope fee, and two-factor authentication is mandatory on every account rather than an upgrade.
Against Karbon at the same headcounts, annual:
| Seats | Kveldo | Karbon Team | Karbon Business |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $790 | $708 | $1,068 |
| 5 | $1,990 | $3,540 | $5,340 |
| 15 | $3,990 | $10,620 | $16,020 |
The first row is the one we are not going to hide: at a single seat Karbon Team is cheaper than Kveldo Solo. If you are a solo practitioner and the invoice is the only thing you are optimizing, Karbon Team or Financial Cents Solo will both beat us on price.
Two further limits worth stating plainly. Kveldo does not e-file, and it does not offer on-screen 8879 signing with knowledge-based authentication the way TaxDome does. It handles 8879s through a portal document request instead: the client signs the form by hand and uploads it, which IRS Publication 1345 explicitly permits and does not treat as a remote transaction. That is a procedural difference, not a capability gap. And Kveldo meters one thing: AI doing production work on client documents draws on a monthly token allowance, and past it the rate is $15 per million tokens, billed rather than blocked.
What the flat model changes is the shape of the next three years. On a per-user platform every hire is a permanent monthly increase. Between Kveldo's bands, a hire costs nothing.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best Karbon alternatives?
It depends which part of Karbon you are replacing. For full practice management at a lower per-seat price, Financial Cents at $49 per user per month or TaxDome at $1,000 per seat per year. For workflow only, Jetpack Workflow at $49 per seat, bearing in mind it lists no client portal or e-signature. For tax resolution work, Canopy with its $50 per user module. For firms that want to stop paying per user at all, a flat per-firm platform such as Kveldo.
How much does Karbon cost?
Karbon pricing is $59 per user per month on Team and $89 on Business with annual billing, or $79 and $99 billed monthly. Monthly billing is only available to teams of four or more. E-signature is extra, sold in credit bundles from $100 per 100 credits.
Is there a cheaper Karbon alternative?
Yes, several. Financial Cents Team is $49 per user per month and Jetpack Workflow Starter is $49 per seat against Karbon Team at $59. Both come with conditions: Financial Cents binds every plan to a 12-month agreement, and Jetpack lists no client portal or e-signature on its pricing page.
Karbon vs Canopy: which costs more?
Canopy, at the entry point. Canopy Standard is $74 per user per month against Karbon Team at $59, though Canopy Standard includes e-signature that Karbon sells as credits. Canopy's specialist power-ups are priced separately, from $34 per client credit for tax workflow automation and $50 per user per month for tax resolution.
Jetpack Workflow vs Karbon: what is the real difference?
Category rather than price. Karbon is practice management with a client portal included on every plan. The $49 against $59 comparison only holds if you already have a portal.

Yes. Karbon sells e-signature in credit bundles: $100 for 100 credits up to $2,000 for 4,000. Each request uses one credit and each request with knowledge-based authentication uses two. Engagement letters sent through Karbon Engagements do not use credits.
