Comparisons

Every competitor figure is taken from that company's own pricing page and dated. Where a rival is cheaper, we say so.

Guides and how-tos

Practice problems, with the process that fixes them.

Glossary

Ninety-odd terms, defined without jargon.

Software vendors and accountants use overlapping vocabularies that do not quite line up — "client", "seat", "engagement", "work item", "WIP" all mean subtly different things depending on who is talking. This is our attempt at a shared dictionary, searchable and free.

WIP (Work in Process) Practice management

Work that has been started and not yet billed. In a practice management context, the WIP board is the live list of open engagements with their current status, owner and due date.

Magic-byte validation Security

Checking a file's actual binary signature rather than trusting its extension or declared MIME type. A file named w2.pdf is only accepted as a PDF if its first bytes actually say so.

Memorized payee rule Bookkeeping

A saved mapping from a payee name to a Chart of Accounts account, so the same vendor categorizes itself on every future statement for that client.
